The Suzuki method is a child-centered way of learning music, and children can begin as young as 3-4 years old. Often called the “mother tongue” method, children learn music in the same way they learn to speak their native language. First, children listen to their parents’ speech, than imitate the sounds they hear. Later, they learn to use written language.
When they begin learning and instrument, children learn first to play by ear, listening to CD’s at home and practicing with a parent. Games keep the lessons fun.
Reading music is taught as soon as the student masters position, and can play a few tunes by ear. When the ear learns to reproduce beautiful music, then the eye is ready to read.
